About Ken

My name is Ken Packie.
I am a chainsaw sculptor residing in the Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts.

Art has always tried to rear its head in my life and it was always suppressed to try to find a more conventional way to support my Family. It took its form in caricatures, watercolors, illustrations, and decorative yard art until  I finally gave into an impulse and took a 3 day class for chainsaw carving. That was all I needed....I knew immediately that wood was my medium and chainsaws were the tool to use.   Chainsaw carving is not the easiest way to create beautiful things...it can be hot, noisy, and dirty ...yet I can never stop smiling while carving.
I am surrounded by inspiration starting with my Wife and 2 Boys and fueled by The Berkshire Hills. Whenever I am kayaking on the creeks that drop out of the hills, biking through the woods, or walking my business mascot, Frisco with the family out on our  future homestead, I am absorbing it all and my mind is constantly creating that next piece. Ideas are  everywhere when you actually slow down to look, listen, and feel......something that can be difficult for some, but possible for all. I try to capture those small details for all to enjoy in my carvings.
In the time I have been carving I have taken the 6th highest auction price at the Ridgway Rendezvous in 2007 and 2nd highest in 2008. The picture above was my 2008 entry. Approximatly 200 carvers from around the globe attend The Rendezvous every February in NW Pennsylvania. In my first official competition I placed 5th at Tupper Lake in 2007 and will be competing in the first ever Bear Carving Invitational Competition in Gettysburg in July.
